The local disposal guide
St. Helens households are served by Hudson Garbage and Recycling, which the city names on its New Resident Information page at 503-397-1534, and the company collects garbage, recycling and yard debris Monday through Friday with the carts out the night before or by 6 a.m. The residential carts take only normal household trash, and the bulky things people usually need gone, such as furniture, appliances, mattresses, tires, electronics and yard debris, are outside that cart list, so the work moves to the Columbia County Transfer Station at 1601 Railroad Avenue in St. Helens. The transfer station is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., charges self haul loads by weight with a minimum for the first 320 pounds, and free of charge takes electronics, metal appliances, glass, cardboard, scrap metal, motor oil, cooking oil, architectural paint and medical sharps in certified containers, while refrigerant appliances, antifreeze, fluorescent tubes, car batteries and tires carry a published fee. Household chemicals wait for one of the county's free collection events, which run at the transfer station address several times a year for county residents only.
