A clear count. An exact price.

Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Mattress and box spring

Accepted with preparation

A mattress does not belong in the curbside cart, so it goes as a self haul to the Columbia County Transfer Station or into a container arranged with the hauler.

City cost & eligibility
The transfer station charges a self haul minimum of 27.48 dollars for a load up to 320 pounds and 167.19 dollars a ton above that, with a senior rate of 16.91 dollars for a load up to 320 pounds per the rate sheet effective July 1, 2025, and Hudson Garbage quotes any curbside or container arrangement separately at 503-397-1534, so confirm the route and the price before the mattress leaves the property.
When & how
The transfer station is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closes on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, with early closings at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of every cart, cover or secure the load for the trip because an unsecured load carries a published charge, and plan for the weight minimum so a single mattress is not worth a separate trip. Combine the mattress with other household waste that the carts will not take.

Couch, sofa and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named on the hauler's container list and is accepted as household waste at the county transfer station.

City cost & eligibility
A self haul to the transfer station is charged by weight with a 27.48 dollar minimum up to 320 pounds and 167.19 dollars a ton above that, and a furniture piece hauled in a Hudson container is quoted separately at 503-397-1534, so confirm which route is cheaper for the load.
When & how
The transfer station takes loads Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a container is delivered on the schedule the hauler agrees to.
Get it ready
Furniture can go in a roll off container or a short term container, or into a self hauled load, and a couch or dresser should be placed so it can be lifted without a second person. Keep furniture out of the recycling cart, which refuses metal longer than eighteen inches or heavier than five pounds, and out of the garbage cart, which takes only bagged household trash.

Refrigerator, washer, dryer and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

Metal appliances are free at the county transfer station, a unit holding refrigerant is charged a published per appliance fee, and appliances are refused in the curbside carts.

City cost & eligibility
At the Columbia County Transfer Station a metal dishwasher, water heater, clothes dryer, clothes washer or stove is free of charge, while a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner that holds refrigerant is charged 26.30 dollars each on the rate sheet effective July 1, 2025. A Hudson container instead refuses an appliance with Freon and accepts a large appliance without chlorofluorocarbons or Freon, so confirm the route with the hauler at 503-397-1534 or the scale house at 503-397-9811.
When & how
The transfer station takes appliances Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and remove the doors where the manufacturer allows it before the trip, keep the appliance out of both curbside carts because the cart list refuses appliances, and say whether the unit holds refrigerant when you call, because that is what decides whether the drop off is free or carries the posted fee.

Television, monitor and computer

Accepted with preparation

Computers, monitors, printers and televisions are recycled free in the electronics area at the Columbia County Transfer Station.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free of charge in the designated electronics recycling area at the Columbia County Transfer Station, which lists computers, monitors, printers and televisions. Electronics are refused in a Hudson container and must stay out of the curbside recycling cart.
When & how
The electronics area is available during transfer station hours, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Get it ready
Wipe the drive or remove the storage before handover, take the cords and peripherals with the device, place the items into the designated boxes rather than into a general waste pile, and keep electronics out of the recycling cart, which lists Christmas tree lights as unacceptable and takes no devices.

Treadmill, exercise bike and weight bench

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the published lists, so the route is a self haul charged by weight or a container the hauler arranges.

City cost & eligibility
No published list names an exercise machine, so the practical route is a self haul to the Columbia County Transfer Station at the published by weight rates, or a Hudson container quoted at 503-397-1534, and the price depends on the weight and how the piece is presented.
When & how
The transfer station takes loads Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a container pickup is arranged with the hauler.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it will come apart so the load is dense rather than bulky, tie the cord and loose parts to the frame, remove any battery pack so it is handled as a battery rather than as garbage, and keep the machine out of the recycling cart.

Passenger tires

Accepted with preparation

Tires are charged per tire at the Columbia County Transfer Station, with a lower rate when the rim is off, and they are also taken in a hauler container.

City cost & eligibility
From $5.2 for the off rim passenger car tire charge at the Columbia County Transfer Station, with an on rim tire at 10.50 dollars, a semi or tractor tire at 15.70 dollars off the rim or 26.20 dollars on the rim, and bicycle, motorcycle and solid core tires charged at the garbage rate. Customers at the Columbia County Transfer Station scale house on Railroad Avenue, where tires of any kind are refused in the curbside carts and are charged per tire in a Hudson container as well.
When & how
The scale house takes tires Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Get it ready
Take the rims off where possible because the off rim rate is roughly half the on rim rate, keep the count small so the per tire charges do not exceed the garbage minimum, and keep tires out of both curbside carts and out of the recycling cart, where the hauler lists them as unacceptable.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

No curbside route exists for construction material, so a project load goes into a hauler container or a self haul to the transfer station.

City cost & eligibility
There is no collection day for debris. The Columbia County Transfer Station collects all asbestos free construction debris as solid waste at the self haul rates on the published sheet, and Hudson offers roll off containers as well as short term containers for remodeling debris, with the container price quoted directly at 503-397-1534.
When & how
Containers are delivered and collected on the schedule the hauler agrees to, and the transfer station takes debris Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an early close on the holiday weekends listed on its page.
Get it ready
Order the container before the work starts where the load is large, keep debris out of both curbside carts, and separate asbestos suspect material, because the transfer station takes construction debris only when it is asbestos free. The published drop box service areas are Clatskanie, Goble, Prescott and Rainier, while the short term 2 yard containers are offered in St. Helens as well, so confirm which container class the work needs before ordering.

Bulky household junk

Accepted with preparation

Bulky items leave through a hauler container or a self hauled load at the county transfer station, because the curbside carts take only normal household trash.

City cost & eligibility
A self hauled load costs a 27.48 dollar minimum up to 320 pounds and 167.19 dollars a ton above that, with a 16.91 dollar senior rate at the same minimum, and a container is quoted by size and service area at 503-397-1534, so compare the two before the load is built.
When & how
The transfer station is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and closing early at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Hudson's office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Get it ready
Sort the load before the trip because the transfer station charges different rates for household waste, yard debris and recycling, and separate the free items, such as scrap metal, cardboard, glass, motor oil, cooking oil, architectural paint and electronics, into their own bins rather than paying the waste rate for them. Secure the load on the way, because an unsecured load carries a published charge.

Bagged household trash and carts

Accepted with preparation

Household trash goes in the grey cart with the green recycling cart and the brown yard debris cart, out by 6 a.m. on the collection day.

City cost & eligibility
Residential service is a monthly subscription billed by Hudson Garbage with the invoice dated the last day of the month and payment due by the fifteenth, and the company does not publish the rate on the page read here, so confirm the monthly charge for the cart sizes you need at 503-397-1534.
When & how
Collection runs Monday through Friday, the containers go out the night before or by 6 a.m. on the service day, and pickup is suspended only on New Year's Day and Christmas.
Get it ready
Set the carts at the curb at least three feet from any other cart and six feet from vehicles. The garbage cart takes food and normal household trash and refuses antifreeze or motor oil, appliances, asbestos, ashes hot or cold, car batteries, chemicals, dead animals, dirt or rocks, liquid paint, medical sharps, medical waste, recycling, tires and yard waste, so anything on that list goes to the transfer station instead.

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

Household chemicals go free to the county collection events for county residents, with several events at the transfer station address each year.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free at the Columbia County household hazardous waste collection events, which are open to Columbia County residents only, with quantity limits of 25 gallons or 200 pounds of waste per visit and material carried in containers of five gallons or less.
When & how
The published 2026 events at 1601 Railroad Avenue in St. Helens are Feb. 28, June 6, Aug. 22 and Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Clatskanie on Oct. 3, Rainier on May 16 and Vernonia on April 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. Paint in containers of five gallons or less, used motor oil and medical sharps in certified containers are also free at the transfer station on ordinary days, while antifreeze, batteries and fluorescent tubes carry a scale fee on ordinary days and are free during the events.
Get it ready
Pack the material in the original container or a lined box, keep liquids in containers of five gallons or less, label anything that is not in its original container, separate chemicals to avoid mixing, carry the load in the trunk or away from passengers, and be prepared to leave the containers behind. Asbestos containing material, bio-medical waste, items with embedded batteries, dead animals, garbage, liquids over five gallons, radioactive material and medicines are refused, and medicines go to a MedTakeBack location instead.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in St. Helens.

How much does a self hauled load cost?

The Columbia County Transfer Station charges a 27.48 dollar minimum for a load up to 320 pounds and 167.19 dollars a ton above that, with a senior rate of 16.91 dollars at the same minimum. Yard debris uses its own minimum and per ton rate, and an unsecured load adds a published charge.Official guidance

Can you pick up bags of junk today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?

No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.

Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?

Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

How does a mattress leave a St. Helens home?

It does not go in the cart, because the residential cart list accepts only food and normal household trash. Take the mattress to the Columbia County Transfer Station at 1601 Railroad Avenue, open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and charged by weight with a minimum for the first 320 pounds, or ask Hudson Garbage at 503-397-1534 about a container.Official guidance

Will a couch go in a container?

Yes. Furniture is on the list of items accepted in a Hudson roll off or short term container, and a household can also take a couch to the Columbia County Transfer Station as household waste. Containers are quoted at 503-397-1534 and self haul loads are charged by weight.Official guidance

What does a refrigerator cost to drop off?

A refrigerant appliance such as a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner is charged 26.30 dollars each at the Columbia County Transfer Station, and the same page shows metal appliances such as a dishwasher, water heater, dryer, washer or stove accepted free of charge. A Hudson container refuses an appliance with Freon.Official guidance

Where do St. Helens televisions and computers go?

To the electronics recycling area at the Columbia County Transfer Station, 1601 Railroad Avenue, where computers, monitors, printers and televisions are accepted free of charge during the Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours. Hudson containers do not take electronics.Official guidance

Will the hauler take a treadmill?

Exercise equipment is not on the published cart, container or transfer station lists, so the practical route is a self haul to the Columbia County Transfer Station charged by weight with a 27.48 dollar minimum up to 320 pounds, or a container arranged with Hudson Garbage at 503-397-1534.Official guidance

What does tire disposal cost in St. Helens?

A passenger car tire is 5.20 dollars off the rim or 10.50 dollars on the rim, a semi or tractor tire is 15.70 or 26.20 dollars, and bicycle, motorcycle and solid core tires are charged at the garbage rate, per the rate sheet effective July 1, 2025. Hudson containers also take tires at a per tire charge.Official guidance

How does construction debris leave a St. Helens project?

In a container from Hudson Garbage or as a self haul to the Columbia County Transfer Station, which collects all asbestos free construction debris as solid waste at the published self haul rates. The roll off containers are listed for the Clatskanie, Goble, Prescott and Rainier service areas, while the short term 2 yard containers include St. Helens, so confirm the container class at 503-397-1534.Official guidance

Are containers available in St. Helens?

Short term 2 yard containers are offered in Clatskanie, Columbia City, Deer Island, Rainier, St. Helens and Warren, while the larger roll off containers are listed for the Clatskanie, Goble, Prescott and Rainier service areas. Hudson quotes the container and the service at 503-397-1534.Official guidance

What are the cart rules and sizes?
