When & how

Get it ready
Have the refrigerant professionally removed and the unit tagged as free of freon and refrigerant, because the city requires the tag on refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners and similar items. Drain a toilet before it goes out, empty water heaters of water, and keep hazardous material out of the pile.
Carts out by 7 a.m., never more than a night early
Carts go to the curb or the alley by 7 a.m. on the collection day and may be set out no earlier than 6 p.m. or one hour before sunset the night before, whichever comes first. Everything has to be inside the cart with the lid closed, and material left beside or on top of the cart is not collected.
The monthly bulk and brush pile goes to the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday morning of the collection week and may be placed out as early as the Friday before, with earlier placement risking a code violation. The hauler may collect the pile on any day of that week, so it stays out until it is taken.
