The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Garland collects for itself and it takes large items at the curb every week. Brush and bulky goods run on the same day as the green trash cart, so a couch, a mattress, carpet, a refrigerator or a pile of small remodeling material goes out with the regular route as long as it came from the resident's own property, the piles are separate and at least four feet apart, and no single item, bag, box or bundle weighs more than forty pounds. Construction material from the resident's own project is capped at four curbside collections a calendar year, and concrete, stone and brick do not go to the curb at all. Tires are refused at the curb and the city sends them to a recycler. Appliances can also go free into the scrap metal bin at the recycling center, electronics go to a private recycler on Cavalier Drive or to the Transfer Station by appointment, and the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center on Plano Road takes household chemicals and, at no cost for a Garland resident with proof of residency, batteries, fluorescent tubes, computers, cell phones and small electronics. A resident can also haul bulky material free to the transfer station or the Hinton landfill with a driver's license and a current utility bill.

Weekly green cart collection

Accepted with preparation

Residential garbage goes out in the city issued green cart on the address collection day, and the day is found through the city's MyGarland address lookup. Anything too large for the cart, including tree trimmings, furniture, bags of leaves and grass, or carpeting, moves to the separate weekly brush and bulky collection.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no collection rate on its sanitation pages, so confirm the amount on the utility account with the Sanitation Department at 972-205-3500. A load that arrives at a city managed disposal facility without a secured cover over it carries an additional charge under the city ordinance.
When & how
Put the container out by 7 a.m. on the collection day and leave it out until at least 7 p.m., because crews can work from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A missed collection is reported through eAssist or on 972-205-3500, and a resident has twenty four hours after the collection day to report it.
Get it ready
Bag the trash, keep the lid closed and do not overfill, because bags outside the container and household trash placed outside the cart are not collected. Place the container near the driveway, at the front curb or within three feet of the alley edge, with the wheels toward the house, four feet of space between multiple containers, and clear of mailboxes, electrical or cable boxes and meters. Never put household chemicals or electronics in the cart; both go to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Road, free for Garland residents.

Weekly brush and bulky goods collection

Accepted with preparation

Garland collects brush and bulky goods from the front curb every week on the same day as the green trash cart, for large household items that will not fit in the cart. The material has to be generated by the residents at their own property, and it goes out as separate piles.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential service, with no separate curbside charge published for the weekly brush and bulky collection. A Garland resident may also haul bulky waste material at no cost to the Transfer Station or the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill by showing a driver's license and a copy of the most current utility bill, and a load arriving at a city managed facility without a secured cover is assessed an additional charge under the city ordinance.
When & how
Bulky items may be placed at the curb only one day before the scheduled collection and no earlier than 6 p.m., and they may not be mixed with other solid waste. Tree limbs are the exception and may be placed at the front curb any day of the week. Material goes out before 7 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Keep brush, bulky waste, appliances and bagged grass and leaves in separate piles at least four feet apart, and never mix brush with a mattress or furniture. Keep piles away from mailboxes, electrical and cable boxes, phone pedestals, sprinkler heads and overhanging limbs, keep them from blocking a motorist's view, and move any vehicle blocking a pile because material blocked by a vehicle cannot be collected. Nothing may weigh more than forty pounds as an individual item, bag, box or bundle, and a crew that leaves material behind attaches a tag explaining why.

Furniture, couches and carpet

Accepted with preparation

Furniture and carpet are both named on the bulky goods accepted list for the weekly curbside collection, so a couch or a rolled carpet goes out with the regular brush and bulky route rather than into the green cart.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the weekly brush and bulky collection for material the resident generated at their own property, with no separate curbside charge published. The same item can also be hauled free to the Transfer Station or the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill with a driver's license and current utility bill.
When & how
Put the piece out no earlier than 6 p.m. on the day before the scheduled collection, as its own pile, and have it at the curb before 7 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Keep the piece in the bulky pile rather than the brush pile, keep it under the forty pound individual item limit so a heavier piece has to be broken down, and keep it clear of vehicles, mailboxes and utility boxes. Material generated at another address, such as a lawn or construction load from a different property, is refused.

Mattresses

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses are named on the bulky goods accepted list, and the city pairs them with furniture in the rule that brush must never be mixed with bulky waste such as mattresses and furniture. A mattress therefore goes out with the weekly brush and bulky collection as part of the bulky pile.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the weekly brush and bulky collection for a mattress the resident put out at their own property, with no separate curbside charge published. A resident who would rather haul it can take bulky material free to the Transfer Station or the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill with a driver's license and current utility bill.
When & how
Set the mattress out no earlier than 6 p.m. on the day before the scheduled collection, in the bulky pile rather than the brush pile, and before 7 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the brush pile and under the forty pound individual item limit, keep it dry where possible because the city notes that rain can push an item over the weight limit, and set it clear of vehicles and utility fixtures so the crew can reach it.

Large appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Large appliances can be left at the curb for collection or dropped free in the scrap metal bin at the Drop-Off Recycling Center. The city names dryers, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washers and water heaters, and adds microwaves, garbage disposals, dishwashers and air conditioners, with the instruction to remove contents and tape the doors shut.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No charge at the curb as part of the appliance pile in the weekly brush and bulky collection, and no charge for a drop off in the scrap metal bin at the Drop-Off Recycling Center. Garland Sanitation collects appliances for scrap metal recycling through a process that removes harmful elements.
When & how
Put the appliance out with the separate appliance pile on the brush and bulky collection day, no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before, or take it to the scrap metal bin at the recycling center.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and tape or tie the doors shut, or remove a refrigerator door entirely, because the city requires that for safety. Keep appliances in their own pile at least four feet from the brush, bulky and landscape piles, and consider donating a working appliance through a charity before setting it out.

Computers, electronics and batteries

Accepted with preparation

Electronics have three city routes and one free county route. Garland residents can take computer equipment, wires and cables, appliances, audio visual, network and communications equipment and office equipment to eRecycler on Cavalier Drive, bring a listed set of items to the Transfer Station by appointment, or use the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center, where batteries of all kinds, fluorescent light tubes, computers, cell phones and small electronics are free with proof of residency.

City cost & eligibility
The city states that batteries of all kinds, fluorescent light tubes, computers, cell phones and small electronics are recycled at no cost at the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center with proof of residency in the form of a driver's license or current utility bill, while it publishes no rate for the Transfer Station appointment and names a private recycler that sets its own terms. Confirm the route and any fee before the load goes out, using the county center on 214-553-1765 for its hours or the Sanitation Department on 972-205-3500.
When & how
Book an appointment for the Transfer Station route through the city's online booking page, or drive to eRecycler on Cavalier Drive, or to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Road in Dallas. Call 214-553-1765 to check the center's hours.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before a computer, phone or console leaves the house, keep electronics out of the green cart because the city bars them there, and keep them out of the blue recycling cart. At the Transfer Station appointment, monitors, televisions and alkaline batteries are refused, so those items have to use another route.

Televisions and monitors

Special rules apply

Televisions and monitors have no city drop-off. The Transfer Station electronics appointment refuses both, Goodwill no longer accepts televisions, and the city points residents to the state television and computer recycling programs, the Dell and Goodwill RECONNECT program for other equipment, and retailers such as Staples, Best Buy and Office Depot.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no city rate or city drop-off for a television or monitor, so confirm the route and any fee with the Sanitation Department at 972-205-3500, or use one of the programs the city names, which set their own terms.
When & how
Check the program the city names before the set moves, because the Transfer Station appointment will refuse a monitor or television if it arrives there.
Get it ready
Keep the screen out of the green cart and the blue recycling cart. If the unit is going to a retailer or a manufacturer program, confirm the accepted size and any fee first, and if it is going to a state program, check that the program covers the brand.

Construction, remodeling and demolition material

Special rules apply

Construction and remodeling material from a small household project the resident completed is accepted curbside in manageable piles, but only four times per calendar year, and smaller pieces have to be bagged, boxed or bundled and kept at forty pounds or less. Concrete, stone, brick, roofing material, asphalt, rocks, dirt and pallets are refused at the curb and go to the landfill or a private hauler.

City cost & eligibility
The curbside collections are part of the residential service with no separate charge published, but a project that needs more than the four annual curbside sets is handled through the city's residential roll-off program, which is priced after an on site assessment and billed on the monthly utility bill. A load of concrete, stone or brick hauled to the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill is also priced at the site, so confirm the route and the amount before the work starts.
When & how
Construction and demolition waste from the resident's own remodeling may be set out only four times in a calendar year, on the weekly brush and bulky collection day, and a larger project is handled through the residential roll-off program.
Get it ready
Bag, box or bundle all smaller items, including piping, wire and plumbing fixtures, keep every bag, box and bundle at forty pounds or less, and put gypsum board in a labeled disposable box. Keep concrete, stone, brick, roofing material, asphalt, rocks, dirt and pallets out of the curb pile because the city refuses them there and sends them to the landfill, and keep glass in a clearly marked cardboard box or another solid container.

Tires

Not on the regular city route

Tires are refused at the curb, where the city tells residents to take them to a recycler, and they also appear on the recycling center's non acceptable list.

City cost & eligibility
There is no city rate for a tire because the city does not collect tires: it refuses them in the brush and bulky collection and at the recycling center and refers residents to a recycler. The cost is set by whichever recycler or retailer a resident uses.
When & how
Take the tires straight to a recycler rather than putting them out for the weekly collection, because a tire in a curb pile is refused.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the brush pile, the bulky pile, the blue recycling cart and the green cart, and ask the recycler about any limit or charge before loading the vehicle.

Household chemicals, paint and pool chemicals

Accepted with preparation

Household chemicals never go in the green cart. The city directs paint, pesticides, fertilizer, pool chemicals and the rest of the household chemical list to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Road in Dallas, which it states is free for Garland residents.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free for a Garland resident at the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Road in Dallas, with proof of residency in the form of a driver's license or a current utility bill. The city publishes no hours for the center and directs residents to call 214-553-1765 to check them.
When & how
Take the material to the Dallas County center during its operating hours, which are confirmed on 214-553-1765, and keep it out of every city cart and pile until then.
Get it ready
Keep products in their original containers with the original labels, secure the lids tightly, never mix products, and never pour them on the ground, into a storm sewer or down a sink. The city's product list runs from aerosol sprays, ammonia, brake fluid, detergents and drain cleaners through pesticides, pool chemicals, paints and stains, paint removers, thermometers and wood sealers.

Blue cart and recycling center

Accepted with preparation

Recycling runs in the blue cart, where empty, clean and dry bottles, jars, cans, boxes, cartons and papers go loose with plastics numbered one through five and seven accepted and number six left out. The Citizens' Recycling Center takes everything the blue cart takes plus more and is open six days a week.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential service, with no separate charge published for the blue cart or for the Citizens' Recycling Center. Material at the center has to be loose, clean, dry and empty, and bags are not accepted there.
When & how
Put the blue cart out on the recycling day shown on the city's 2026 recycling calendar, or use the Citizens' Recycling Center, which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the recycling loose in the blue cart, keep all plastic bags out, and leave food, liquids, diapers, hoses, wires, batteries, propane tanks and to go containers out. Rinse and empty the containers, remove newspaper and magazines from plastic sleeves, and check an item against the city's acceptable materials page when in doubt, because anything that is not listed should not go in the cart.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the bulky goods list, the recycling center lists or the appliance list. The nearest published category is the bulky goods pile for household material that will not fit the cart, so a treadmill or weight machine is confirmed with the Sanitation Department first.

City cost & eligibility
No exercise equipment entry or rate is published, so call the Sanitation Department at 972-205-3500 and describe the machine. If it is taken as bulky goods there is no separate curbside charge, but the machine has to come from the resident's own property and stay within the forty pound individual item limit.
When & how
Call the department before the machine goes out, then set it out with the bulky pile no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before the collection and before 7 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart so each piece stays under forty pounds, keep any battery pack or console separate for the electronics route, and keep it out of the brush pile and out of both carts.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

A Garland resident can self haul in four directions. Bulky waste material goes free to the Transfer Station or to the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill at 3175 Elm Grove Road in Rowlett with a driver's license and a copy of the most current utility bill, and an uncovered load carries an additional charge under the city ordinance. The Citizens' Convenience Center at the landfill is for residential customers only and takes bulky goods and household trash, while fencing, dirt, dead animals and brick have to go to the working site. The Citizens' Recycling Center takes everything the blue cart takes plus more, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with material loose, clean, dry and empty because bags are not accepted. Household chemicals, batteries of all kinds, fluorescent light tubes, computers, cell phones and small electronics go to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Road in Dallas, which is free for a Garland resident with proof of residency and whose hours are on 214-553-1765, and a resident with computer equipment, wires and cables, appliances, audio visual, network and communications equipment or office equipment can also use eRecycler at 3902 Cavalier Drive or the Transfer Station electronics appointment, where monitors, televisions and alkaline batteries are refused. The Citizens' Convenience Center is for residential customers only and accepts bulky goods and household trash, while fencing, dirt, dead animals and brick have to be taken to the working site instead. When does Garland collect brush and bulky goods?

Every week on the same day as the green trash cart, with the day confirmed through the city's MyGarland address lookup or the published schedule. Bulky items may go out only one day ahead of the collection and no earlier than 6 p.m., and they may not be mixed with other solid waste. Tree limbs are the exception and may be placed at the front curb any day of the week.Official guidance

How should the piles be separated?

Keep brush, bulky waste, appliances and bagged grass and leaves as four separate piles at least four feet apart, because the city collects four types of material and lists them separately. Brush is never mixed with bulky waste such as a mattress or furniture, piles stay away from mailboxes, utility boxes, sprinkler heads and overhanging limbs, and nothing blocked by a vehicle is collected. Every individual item, bag, box or bundle has to weigh forty pounds or less.Official guidance

Will Garland take a couch at the curb?

Yes, on the weekly brush and bulky collection. Furniture and carpet are named on the accepted bulky goods list along with mattresses, lumber, siding and gypsum board, and the material goes out as its own pile no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before the collection and before 7 a.m. on the collection day. Every individual item has to weigh forty pounds or less, so a heavy piece may need to be broken down, and material has to come from the resident's own property.Official guidance

How do I get rid of a mattress in Garland?

Put it out with the weekly brush and bulky collection as part of the bulky pile. Mattresses are named on the accepted bulky goods list, the city specifically says brush must not be mixed with bulky waste such as mattresses and furniture, and the item has to weigh forty pounds or less and be set out no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before collection. A resident who would rather haul it can bring bulky material free to the Transfer Station or the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill with a driver's license and current utility bill.Official guidance

Where do refrigerators and other appliances go in Garland?

Either at the curb with the weekly brush and bulky collection or free in the scrap metal bin at the Drop-Off Recycling Center. The city names dryers, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washers and water heaters as large appliances, and microwaves, garbage disposals, dishwashers and air conditioners as the other accepted units. Empty the appliance and remove the refrigerator door or tape and tie it shut, and keep the appliance in its own pile at least four feet from the other material.Official guidance

Where do computers and electronics go in Garland?

Garland residents can take computer equipment, wires and cables, appliances, audio visual, network and communications equipment and office equipment to eRecycler at 3902 Cavalier Drive, or bring computers, laptops, cell phones, cameras, printers, copiers, fax machines, office phones, chargers, power supplies, video game systems, cables and small appliances to the Transfer Station by appointment, where monitors, televisions and alkaline batteries are refused. Batteries of all kinds, fluorescent light tubes, computers, cell phones and small electronics are also free at the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Road with proof of residency.Official guidance

Where do batteries go in Garland?

To the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Road in Dallas, where the city says batteries of all kinds are recycled at no cost for a Garland resident who shows a driver's license or current utility bill. Alkaline batteries are refused at the Transfer Station electronics appointment, so the county center is the route for those. Call 214-553-1765 to check the center's hours.Official guidance

What does Garland charge for bulky and large item collection?

Nothing extra beyond the residential service: brush and bulky goods are collected weekly at the curb on the same day as the trash cart, appliances can go free into the scrap metal bin at the recycling center, and a resident can haul bulky material free to the Transfer Station or the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill with a driver's license and a current utility bill. The costs that do appear are an additional charge for an uncovered load at a city managed disposal facility, the fee based premium brush collection that is priced after an on site assessment, and the residential roll-off program for a remodeling project that exceeds the four annual curbside sets. The city publishes no collection rate on its sanitation pages, so confirm the utility amount on 972-205-3500.Official guidance

What will Garland not take at the curb?

Tires, household chemicals such as paint, pesticides, fertilizer and pool chemicals, household garbage outside the cart, roofing materials, concrete, asphalt, rocks, dirt, pallets and bricks, mirrors and glass that are not in a clearly marked cardboard box, lawn waste or construction debris generated at another address, and any individual item, bag, box or bundle weighing more than forty pounds. Concrete, stone and brick are directed to the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill or a private hauler, and construction and demolition waste from a resident's own project may only be set out four times a calendar year.Official guidance

Who runs sanitation in Garland?

The City of Garland Sanitation Department, which collects the green garbage cart, the blue recycling cart and the weekly brush and bulky goods, and which also operates the Citizens' Recycling Center and the Citizens' Convenience Center at the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill. The department is at 1434 Commerce Street in Garland on 972-205-3500, and the landfill is at 3175 Elm Grove Road in Rowlett on 972-205-3670. Household chemicals and electronics questions lead to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center on 214-553-1765.Official guidance

Where do I take recycling in Garland?

The blue cart is the curbside route, and the Citizens' Recycling Center takes everything the cart takes plus more, so a resident can go there before the normal collection day. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and requires material to be loose, clean, dry and empty because bags are not opened at the processing plant. Scrap metal, appliances, motor oil, batteries, cooking oil and clothing are among the extra materials the center takes.Official guidance
