The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Plano collects bulky waste every month from each household on its own assigned day, and the route is generous: furniture, mattresses and box springs, carpet cut into small sections, bicycles, toys, a drained lawnmower and major appliances such as stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters and microwaves all ride the bulky pile at no extra charge. The pile has to stay inside the published size, no larger than six feet by four feet by four feet and within six feet of the alley or curb, and it cannot be set out more than five days before the assigned day. Two kinds of load leave the free route: a pile that runs over the size limit, an out of cycle request, or a major renovation load has to be booked as a special paid collection with a per cubic yard charge and a minimum, and anything holding refrigerant carries an extra environmental fee on top. Brush and yard trimmings are excluded from bulky waste entirely and have their own weekly collection. Paint, oil, pesticides, solvents and other chemicals never go in the pile: the city schedules a household chemical collection to the door with a marked box, a gallon limit and a container size cap, and residents can also bring back reusable chemicals free from the city's reuse center. Electronics and other outside the cart material move through community recycling events and the city's public recycling drop off rather than the bulky pile, and contractor waste must be handled by the contractor or a permitted hauler.

When & how
For a unit without refrigerant, put it on the bulky pile for the assigned monthly day. For a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner, call Customer Service to schedule the special paid collection and keep the load clear of obstacles for the boom truck.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, secure or remove the doors, and keep the appliance out of the trash and recycling carts. A unit holding refrigerant is not part of the free bulky pile, so book the paid collection and expect the environmental fee.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Special rules apply

Electronics are not part of the bulky pile: the city routes that material to community recycling events and to the public recycling drop off, and the event dates have to be confirmed.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no per item electronics price and lists electronics among the materials accepted at community recycling events rather than on the bulky route, so confirm the next event date and any charge with Customer Service before the device is moved.
When & how
Watch for the next community recycling event or ask Customer Service about the drop off, because electronics do not go out with the bulky pile.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from the device, keep electronics out of the bulky pile and the carts, and separate any paper for shredding or clothing for donation if the same event takes them.
City of Plano residential recycling page with the outside the cart routes, the public recycling drop off and the community recycling events that accept electronics, paper shredding and clothing

Paint, chemicals and other household products

Accepted with preparation

Hazardous products never go in the pile: the city schedules a household chemical collection to the door, with a marked box, a gallon limit and a container size cap, and collected products are redistributed free at the reuse center.

City cost & eligibility
The city does not publish a fee for the household chemical collection on the page, so confirm any charge and the scheduling details with Customer Service when the collection is booked.
When & how
Call Customer Service or submit the online request to schedule the collection, then put the box at the collection point by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day.
Get it ready
Pack the items in a cardboard box marked HCC, keep the box at least two feet from the trash and recycling carts and under fifty pounds, keep each collection to the 15 gallon limit, and keep every container to five gallons or less with the product in its original container except for automotive fluids. Accepted material covers household cleaners, cooking oils, drain cleaners, fire extinguishers, floor care products, furniture polish, insect sprays, metal polish, oven cleaners, window cleaners, helium tanks, fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, pesticides, pool additives and acids, and garage stored products, with mercury thermometers and thermostats scheduled separately by telephone.

Construction, remodeling and heavy material

Special rules apply

A large renovation load can be booked as a special paid collection, but bricks, concrete, dirt, roofing material, contractor waste and many other heavy streams are refused on both the free and the paid route.

City cost & eligibility
From $20 for the special paid collection rate of $10 per cubic yard subject to a $20 minimum, which is the route for a large amount of construction debris from a major household renovation as well as for unmanageable piles. City of Plano households booking through Customer Service, with the charge on the utility bill, while waste generated by a project that requires a contractor has to be disposed of by the contractor or through a permitted hauler.
When & how
Call Customer Service to book the paid collection for a load the bulky route cannot take, and arrange the contractor or permitted hauler route for project waste before the work starts.
Get it ready
Keep bricks, rock, asphalt, gravel, concrete, dirt, soil, sod, roofing material and shingles, railroad ties, glass panes and doors, compressed gas cylinders and hazardous products out of every pile, because both the free and the paid routes refuse them. Small wood and fence sections are accepted when cut to a maximum of six feet by four feet and stacked no higher than four feet.

Treadmills and exercise equipment

Special rules apply

No Plano page names exercise equipment, so a machine is confirmed with Customer Service before it goes out, even though it is the kind of large item the bulky route handles.

City cost & eligibility
The accepted bulky list names furniture, mattresses, appliances and carpet but no exercise machine, and no separate charge is published, so confirm with Customer Service whether the machine rides the bulky pile or has to be booked as a special paid collection.
When & how
Call Customer Service first, then use the assigned bulky day if the machine is accepted there, or book the paid collection if it is not.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, remove the weights and the console, and keep it inside the pile size limits if it is accepted on the bulky route, because an oversized or unmanageable load is refused or moved to the paid collection.
City of Plano bulky waste accepted items page with the accepted list including furniture, mattresses, appliances and carpet, the wood and fence section limits and the refused listCity of Plano bulky waste collection page with the assigned collection day, the pile size and set-out window, the placement rules and the exclusion of brush and yard trimmings

Yard trimmings and brush

Accepted with preparation

Brush and yard trimmings are excluded from the monthly bulky pile and have their own weekly collection, and anything beyond that criteria is booked as a special paid collection.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no separate price for the weekly yard trimming collection and directs anything outside its criteria to the special paid collection, which is charged by the cubic yard with a minimum, so confirm the route and the amount with Customer Service.
When & how
Use the weekly yard trimming collection for routine material, and call Customer Service to book the paid collection when the volume goes beyond what the weekly service accepts.
Get it ready
Keep yard trimmings out of the bulky pile, since brush and trimmings are expressly excluded there, keep treated wood out of the yard stream, and stack what is left so the crew can reach it from the collection point.

How the monthly bulky pile goes out

The pile may not go out more than five days before the assigned bulky waste day, and it has to be out by 7 a.m. on the day itself. A special paid collection is made with a boom truck, so the load has to be clear of the fence, gas meter, mailbox and any low hanging wires before the truck arrives. Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul in Plano runs through two published places plus the scheduled city services. The public recycling drop off, operated by Republic Services, is the only recycling drop off open to the public in the city, and community recycling events held around Plano take electronics, paper for shredding and clothing donations on their published dates. Material that will not fit a cart or the bulky pile moves through the city's scheduled services rather than a neighborhood drop point: a household chemical collection to the door for paint related products, cleaners, oils, pool and garden chemicals, fire extinguishers and helium tanks, and a special paid collection with a boom truck for over sized piles, refrigerant appliances and large renovation loads. The one destination the city names for loads it will not take is the 121 Regional Disposal Facility that NTMWD owns north of the city, and the city sends waste from a project that requires a contractor there through the contractor or a permitted hauler rather than through the curb. Two streams are refused on both the free and the paid collection: bricks, rock, asphalt, gravel, concrete, dirt, soil and sod, and roofing material and shingles.
