The local disposal guide
Richardson collects household trash and recycling twice a week and runs a separate by-request service for everything big: Brush and Bulky Item Collection, known here as BABIC. Furniture, mattresses and box springs, large appliances including refrigerators and freezers, and large electronics such as televisions and computer monitors are all on the accepted list, and the collection carries no additional cost, with the city asking residents to hold requests to about eight a year. Anything under 50 pounds belongs in the twice weekly refuse instead, and anything over 50 pounds is called in and left at the curbside right-of-way. Construction debris works differently: the ordinance puts it entirely in the hands of city-permitted haulers who contract with the resident, and the bulky service refuses it along with tires, concrete, glass and hazardous material.

Furniture is on the city's accepted bulky list and leaves on a requested BABIC pickup, which the city provides at no additional cost to residents. Anything heavier than 50 pounds is called in and set at the curbside right-of-way, while lighter pieces go out with the twice weekly refuse.

Large appliances, including washers, dryers, ovens, stoves, water heaters, refrigerators and freezers, are on the accepted bulky list. Small appliances under 50 pounds go out with the twice weekly refuse instead, and any appliance over 50 pounds has to be called in for a BABIC collection.
Large electronics are accepted as bulky items: the city names televisions and computer monitors on its accepted list, so a screen leaves on a BABIC request at no additional cost. Smaller electronics fall under the 50 pound rule and ride the regular refuse, and the city's own electronics page links to outside recyclers rather than running a municipal programme.
Construction and demolition debris is refused on the bulky route, and the city ordinance gives the work to permitted private haulers: C&D is collected by contractors operating under a city franchise or permit who contract directly with the customer and bill them for the service. A resident project therefore needs an open-top container rather than a curbside call.
Exercise equipment is not named on the accepted or prohibited lists. Scrap metal is accepted, with bicycles and swing sets under 8 feet given as examples, so a metal framed machine may qualify, but the route has to be confirmed with the city.
Household trash and recycling are collected twice a week. What fits the weight limit goes to the normal pickup point, while limbs, logs and bulky items over 50 pounds go to the curbside right-of-way and, if they are bulky, have to be called in.
The handoff matters
Richardson splits material by weight. Household trash, recycling, plastic bags and anything under 50 pounds, including small appliances, microwaves, chairs and vacuums, go to the normal pickup point for the twice weekly collection. Vegetative debris such as limbs and logs over 50 pounds goes to the curbside right-of-way, and a bulky item such as an appliance or piece of furniture over 50 pounds has to be called in as a Brush and Bulky Item Collection and left at the right-of-way.
Residential regular trashBrush and bulky item collectionBABIC is a service provided by request, so the pile does not move until the request is made through the online form or 972-744-4111. Material goes out before midnight on the night before the designated collection day, the city asks residents to limit themselves to about eight requests a year, and a route shown as delayed on the service page usually runs the following day, including Saturday. If a scheduled pile is missed in error, the 24 hour response centre is the same number.
Brush and bulky item collectionRoofing materials and shingles, tile and laminate flooring, hazardous waste such as paint, oil, pesticides and solvents, buildings and sheds, concrete, asphalt, bricks, rocks, gravel, dirt, sand, sod and railroad ties, ceramic tile, remodeling and construction debris, glass, mirrors, windows and window frames, compressed gas or air cylinders and vehicle parts including tires are all prohibited from the bulky pile. Construction material goes in an open-top container from a city-permitted hauler who bills the resident directly.

Call 972-744-4111 or use the online form, then put the piece at the curbside right-of-way before midnight on the night before the designated day.Official guidance
Yes. Mattress and box springs are on the city's accepted bulky list, so a household requests a collection on 972-744-4111 or through the online form and leaves the bed at the curbside right-of-way. Bulky collection is provided at no additional cost, with the city asking residents to keep requests to about eight a year.Official guidance
Yes. Refrigerators and freezers are listed among the large appliances accepted for a Brush and Bulky Item Collection, and the service is provided at no additional cost to residents. Request the pickup on 972-744-4111 and leave the unit at the curbside right-of-way, because anything over 50 pounds has to be called in rather than placed with the regular trash.Official guidance
On a requested bulky collection, because televisions and computer monitors are named as accepted large electronics. The service costs nothing extra for residents. The transfer station does not accept electronics, and the city's electronics page points to Best Buy, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Time to Recycle and Earth911 for other options.Official guidance
The city's Public Services department runs solid waste from 1260 Columbia Drive, with the main number 972-744-4111 answered around the clock. Household trash and recycling are collected twice a week, and the by-request Brush and Bulky Item Collection handles the large items.Official guidance
Nothing extra. The city states that bulky item collection is provided to residents at no additional cost, and it asks residents to limit service requests to about eight calls a year so the service keeps working for everyone.Official guidance
Never in the regular trash. The health department states that hazardous products must be stored in their original containers with lids fastened and disposed of properly, and it points residents to its household hazardous waste guidance rather than to a curbside or bulky route. The same page covers prescription drug take-back.Official guidance
Residents buy refuse bags from the city, which sells them because they meet the code requirements and recommends black or dark coloured bags at 2 mil thickness so they handle properly on the truck. The city publishes the resident price of $10 for a 50 count roll of 30 gallon black bags and $4.50 for a 26 count roll of blue recycling bags, with nonresident rolls at $10.50 and $5.00, and blue recycling bags are free through the city's recycling bag vouchers, redeemed at the Heights and Huffhines recreation centres.Official guidance
Check the service delay page. The city says a route listed as delayed is usually collected the following day, including Saturdays, and that a pile missed in error should be reported to the 24 hour response centre on 972-744-4111.Official guidance
Ask the city at 972-744-4111 first. Scrap metal is accepted as a bulky item, with bicycles and swing sets under 8 feet given as examples, but exercise equipment is not named either way, so the city decides whether the bench rides a bulky request or belongs in the under 50 pound refuse stream.Official guidance
