The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Grand Prairie keeps most large household items on a free weekly curbside route that residents book by phone with Republic Services, and the city names appliances and furniture such as washers, refrigerators, sofas and chairs as the items it takes. Carpet, fencing and building materials sit outside that route, because the city classifies them as construction and demolition waste and sends them to the Grand Prairie Landfill on MacArthur Boulevard. The landfill is also where residents take electronics for free, and household chemicals go to a registration-only collection event at City Hall or to the Fort Worth collection center with a voucher.

Couches and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Sofas, chairs and other household furniture are bulky items in Grand Prairie, which means a free curbside pickup that a resident books by phone and that runs weekly. Furniture that is still in good condition can also be donated to a secondhand store instead of being set out.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Bulky item collection is a free weekly service for Grand Prairie residences who call Republic Services on 817-261-8812 to schedule the stop, and hold times on that line can run 20 to 30 minutes when call volume is high.
When & how
Call Republic Services at 817-261-8812 to book the pickup, then put the furniture at your normal collection point by 7 a.m. on the day the pickup is set for.
Get it ready
Set the furniture out whole rather than in pieces, take out anything still inside drawers, cushions or cabinets, and keep carpet, fencing and building material out of the pile, because the city treats those as construction and demolition waste and routes them to the landfill.

Washers, dryers and refrigerators

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are the clearest case the city names: washers, clothes dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, air conditioning units and stovetops all come under the free weekly bulky pickup, and the landfill also takes appliances from residents.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The curbside appliance pickup is free when a resident books it with Republic Services on 817-261-8812, and an appliance hauled to the Grand Prairie Landfill counts as one of the five free residential loads a household gets each year, before the charge that applies to later loads.
When & how
Call 817-261-8812 to book the curbside stop, or take the appliance to the landfill at 1102 MacArthur Boulevard on any day it is open.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and remove food, water or loose contents before it goes out, and leave the unit beside your normal collection point instead of inside the garbage cart or the recycling bin. Confirm with the Solid Waste Division whether the crew asks for any preparation on the unit itself.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

Grand Prairie describes bulky items as appliances and furniture such as sofas and chairs, and the published pages do not name mattresses, so a mattress or box spring has to be confirmed before it goes out rather than assumed to be covered.

City cost & eligibility
The bulky pickup itself is free, but a mattress is not named in the city's bulky item description, so confirm the mattress and box spring with Republic Services on 817-261-8812 before booking; the landfill list names large items such as refrigerators and sofas as examples and does not name mattresses either, so call 972-237-8151 before a self-haul trip.
When & how
Call Republic Services at 817-261-8812 to ask whether the weekly bulky collection will take the mattress, and if the answer is no, call the landfill on 972-237-8151 about a residential load.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the garbage cart and away from bagged trash, and set it at the collection point only once a pickup is confirmed, because a mattress left at the curb without an appointment is not part of any published city service.

Televisions and screens

Accepted with preparation

Complete televisions are accepted from residents at the Grand Prairie Landfill during normal hours, and the free electronics collection events at City Hall East take them too when a resident registers in advance.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Televisions and other electronics are free to Grand Prairie residents at the landfill and at the free electronics events, where registration is required and space is limited; apartment residents who have no utility bill can use the events with a current Texas license showing a Grand Prairie address.
When & how
Take the television to the landfill at 1102 MacArthur Boulevard between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on a weekday or Saturday, or register on 972-237-8051 for an electronics collection event at City Hall East.
Get it ready
Bring a current Texas license showing a Grand Prairie address together with a matching utility bill for the landfill, and keep televisions out of the garbage cart and out of the household chemical events, which refuse them and route electronics to the separate collection.

Computers and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

Computers, monitors, printers, cables, microwaves and small kitchen electronics are free for residents at the landfill, which publishes a long accepted list for its electronics recycling program and a short list of devices it refuses.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Electronics recycling is free for Grand Prairie residents at the landfill and at the registration-only events, and the program refuses commercial waste, contaminated medical equipment, dehumidifiers, exit signs, fire alarms, mercury containing devices, smoke detectors, x-ray devices and any unit holding liquid, sludge or PCBs.
When & how
Bring the equipment to the landfill at 1102 MacArthur Boulevard during normal hours, or register on 972-237-8051 for a free electronics collection event at City Hall East.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from computers and phones, keep units holding liquids or sludge out of the load because the collection refuses them, and bring the license and utility bill that the landfill requires from every resident. Batteries have their own published routes: alkaline batteries can go in the trash, rechargeable batteries go to Batteries Plus, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's or Staples, car batteries go to Batteries Plus or an auto parts store for a credit, and batteries are also accepted at a household chemical collection event, while the landfill does not accept household or automotive batteries.

Carpet, fencing and building materials

Special rules apply

Carpet, fencing and building materials are not bulky items, so the city routes that material to the Grand Prairie Landfill as construction and demolition waste, where a household gets a set number of free loads each year and pays for the rest.

City cost & eligibility
From $10 each residential load after the five open loads a household gets in a year. A residential load delivered by a household member is free five times a year with a current Grand Prairie water bill and a matching Texas license, and every load after that is charged; commercial and business loads are billed at 40 dollars per ton with a 10 dollar minimum per load, and apartments, mobile homes and townhomes that pay no curbside garbage rate are billed the same commercial rate, while a load of clean brush or wood is priced lower per ton.
When & how
Load the material and take it to the landfill at 1102 MacArthur Boulevard on a weekday or Saturday, or hold it for a Trash Off event when residents can make unlimited free trips.
Get it ready
Keep liquids, lead acid batteries, used oil filters, pesticides, other regulated waste and whole tires out of the load, and call the landfill before bringing clean dirt, which is only accepted Monday to Friday by appointment after it has been tested.

Treadmills and exercise machines

Special rules apply

Exercise machines are not named in the city bulky item description or in the landfill item list, so a treadmill, elliptical or weight set has to be confirmed before it is set out.

City cost & eligibility
The city names appliances and furniture as bulky items and does not name exercise machines, so confirm the machine with Republic Services on 817-261-8812 before booking a curbside pickup, and call the landfill on 972-237-8151 if you plan to haul it in yourself.
When & how
Call 817-261-8812 about the curbside pickup, and if the machine is refused there, call 972-237-8151 about bringing it to the landfill as a residential load.
Get it ready
Break the machine down only if the crew has agreed to take loose parts, because a machine that is dismantled into several pieces may be treated as several items, and keep it out of the garbage cart and clear of the recycling bin.

When & how
Call 817-261-8812 to arrange a bulky pickup, and put bagged garbage out by 7 a.m. on your collection day, which the city's address lookup confirms along with the Wednesday recycling day.
Get it ready
Bag household trash in secured plastic bags rather than boxes or loose containers, keep the pile to appliances and furniture, and send carpet, fencing, building material, electronics and chemicals to the landfill, the electronics collection or a household chemical event instead of the curb.

Household chemicals, paint and medicines

Special rules apply

Household chemicals go to a registration-only collection event in Grand Prairie or to the Fort Worth collection center with a voucher, and each household may use the city service one time a year.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Residents may use the household chemical service once a year, either at a collection event at City Hall or at the Fort Worth Environmental Collection Center with a free voucher from the Public Health and Environmental Quality Department on 972-237-8055; registration is required for the Grand Prairie events and space is limited.
When & how
Register online or on 972-237-8055 for a collection event at City Hall, and note that the Fort Worth center at 6400 Bridge Street takes drop-offs on Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep chemicals in their original containers with the labels on, seal anything that could leak, and leave out what the events refuse, including ammunition, asbestos, appliances, brush, building material, bulky waste, electronics and televisions, explosives, narcotics, pharmaceuticals, printer cartridges, radioactive material such as smoke detectors, syringes, tires and trash. Old medicines go to the police department building at 1525 Arkansas Lane instead.

Tires

Special rules apply

The Grand Prairie Landfill prices tires per tire with small limits for each visit, and the same landfill page also lists tires as refused unless they are quartered, so the condition of the load needs to be confirmed before a trip.

City cost & eligibility
The landfill fee list prices auto and pickup tires at 1 dollar each for up to four per visit, truck tires at 5 dollars each for up to two, and tractor tires at 10 dollars each for one per visit, while the landfill prohibited list refuses tires unless they are quartered, so confirm the type and condition with the landfill on 972-237-8151. Solid or pressed forklift, golf cart and lawn mower tires are not recyclable and can go in the trash.
When & how
Call the landfill on 972-237-8151 before a tire load, then bring a current Texas license showing a Grand Prairie address and a matching water bill when you go.
Get it ready
Count the tires before the trip because the per visit limits are small, keep them out of the garbage cart and the bulky pile, and do not take tires to a household chemical collection event, which refuses them.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Most Grand Prairie residents never need a trip to the landfill, because appliances and furniture such as washers, refrigerators, sofas and chairs come off the curb on a free weekly bulky collection that is booked with Republic Services on 817-261-8812. The exceptions are what the city calls construction and demolition waste, which covers carpet, fencing and building material and has to go to the Grand Prairie Landfill on MacArthur Boulevard, where a household member delivering a residential load gets five free loads a year and pays the published charge on each later load. Electronics are free at the same landfill during normal hours, and a resident who has no utility bill can use the free electronics events at City Hall East instead. Household chemicals and paint go to a registration-only collection event at City Hall or to the Fort Worth collection center with a voucher, one visit a household each year, and mattresses, exercise machines and tires all need a call before they are moved because the published pages do not name them or contradict themselves about the conditions. What will Grand Prairie not take as a bulky item?

Carpet, fencing and building material are outside the bulky program, because the city classifies them as construction and demolition waste and sends them to the Grand Prairie Landfill. Electronics, household chemicals and tires also travel on their own routes, since the landfill takes electronics free, chemicals go to a collection event, and tires need the landfill line to confirm the load.Official guidance

How many free trips to the Grand Prairie Landfill does a household get?

Five free residential loads a year when a household member delivers them with a current Grand Prairie water bill and a matching Texas license, and each load after that carries the published charge. Trash Off weekends allow unlimited free trips with the same proof of residence, while apartments, mobile homes and townhomes that pay no curbside garbage rate are billed at the commercial rate.Official guidance

What happens when the household trash will not fit the bag limit?

The residential route takes one cubic yard of bagged garbage at each visit, so anything larger belongs on the bulky pickup, which is free and booked on 817-261-8812, as long as it is an appliance or a piece of furniture. Households that have moved to the city carts can request an extra cart for a monthly charge, and the landfill is the other route, with five free residential loads a year.Official guidance
