Large items therefore move on three routes: the household's own hauler, the Front Range Landfill that sits inside incorporated Erie on Weld County Road 5, and the town's twice-yearly clean-up events, where vendors take electronics, mattresses, tires and appliances that contain refrigerant. Get it ready
Keep concrete, drywall, siding, roofing and framing out of the carts and out of the town Recycling Center, tarp and secure every load or it is charged double, and separate reusable material from rubble before the trip. Ask the landfill office about roofing shingles and mixed loads, and confirm unit pricing for anything unusual.
Paint, chemicals, batteries, motor oil, antifreeze and sharps cannot go into the carts, the landfill or the Recycling Center, and they go free to the Boulder County facility, which the town contracts for all Erie residents.

Erie residents, who are inside the Boulder County facility's service area along with Boulder County and Broomfield, and Weld County residents at the Weld facilities, which the town limits to Erie residents on the Weld County side of town. Use the Boulder County Hazardous Materials Management Facility at 1901 63rd Street, Boulder, across from the recycling center, open Wednesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and reachable at 720-564-2251. Weld County runs a north facility at 1311 North 17th Avenue in Greeley and a south facility at 5500 Highway 52 in Dacono, and the town points to the state list for further options.
Get it ready
Keep every material in its labelled container, keep containers under five gallons, and never mix chemicals or bring waste in plastic bags, because both counties need to see what is in the load. Sharps go in an industry standard sharps container or a number 2 plastic container with a screw-on lid, labelled for sharps, and Weld County caps a household at 200 pounds per drop off per day.
All homes in Erie are provided waste hauling services by private companies, and the town licenses the haulers that may operate here. Ordinance 15-2020 requires volume based pricing tiers with a 32-gallon minimum, unlimited curbside recycling included in the monthly cost, and curbside organics, and it requires each hauler to report diversion, meet equipment standards and carry insurance. A 2022 request for proposals for a communitywide contract was not awarded, and multi-family buildings with eight residential units or more are not required to take part.
The Recycling Center is free, resident only and does not take bulky goods
The town Recycling Center at 1000 Briggs Street is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week, holiday and weather permitting, and dropping off accepted materials is free to Erie residents who show proof of residency. It takes single-stream recycling, flattened cardboard, yard waste and food scraps, mixed metals and gently used clothing and shoes, but it does not accept furniture, mattresses, rugs, carpet or household appliances, and it refuses Freon units, tanks, oil filters, asbestos and radioactive material. Visitors check in with staff, unload their own material and leave nothing outside the bins.
Landfill loads are tarped, weighed and priced by vehicle
The Front Range Landfill inside Erie is open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Sundays and on some holidays. All vehicles weigh in and out on certified scales, and the landfill prices a car load, a pickup load below the top of the cab, and a pickup load above the cab at different flat rates, with tonnage rates and minimum charges for household waste and for wood, concrete, drywall, siding and dirt. Loads must be covered, tarped and secured or they are charged double, and anyone who gets out of a vehicle needs a reflective safety vest.
The landfill refuses refrigerant units, electronics and hazardous material
The Front Range Landfill does not accept refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, batteries, electronic waste, hazardous waste, hot ashes, liquids including paint and oil, mercury fluorescent bulbs, propane containers, tires or toxic waste. Electronic devices have been banned from Colorado landfill disposal since July 1, 2013. Those categories move to the town clean-up events, the Boulder hard-to-recycle facility, the Boulder County hazardous waste facility or the Weld County sites, so plan the load in two parts rather than mixing them.

The town publishes that the cost per material type at its clean-up events varies by vendor, and it publishes separate amounts for bedding, televisions and refrigerant units. Confirm the current amounts and the event date with the town on 303-926-2880 or SustainableErie@erieco.gov before loading.
Arrange it
Attend the spring or fall clean-up event at the Leon A. Wurl Service Center on 150 Lambert Avenue, which has recently run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The town also runs a free resident landfill drop-off week each spring and fall, most recently from September 9 to 16, and requires a reflective safety vest at the landfill.
Events run on announced days only, the details are subject to change, and the free landfill week needs a tarped load that sits level with the truck or trailer bed. Shredding is offered at the fall event only, limited to two banker box sized loads per resident, and large tractor or agricultural tires are refused.

Erie residents are inside the facility's service area along with Boulder County and Broomfield, and residential waste from outside the service area is charged an out of county fee of 50 dollars. Business waste is accepted by appointment only, and the facility is closed on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Boulder County holidays.
Wednesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., west of the Boulder County Recycling Center, with Tuesday reserved for business waste by appointment. The facility answers at 720-564-2251 and HazMatAll@bouldercounty.gov.
No charge. Erie residents, who are inside the service area for household hazardous waste, with an out of county fee of 50 dollars applying only to residential waste from outside Boulder County, Broomfield and Erie.
Weld County South Household Hazardous Waste Facility

Household hazardous waste from Weld County households, free of charge, with a product reuse programme where reusable products are set out for other residents to take.
The town limits the Weld County facilities to Erie residents on the Weld County side of town. Containers larger than five gallons are refused, containers must be intact and not leaking, waste must be visible rather than bagged, and there is a 200 pound limit per drop off, per day of operation, per household. Business waste is by appointment only at 970-400-2217.
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., closed for major holidays and on the Saturday next to a holiday that falls on a Friday or Monday. The Greeley site at 1311 North 17th Avenue is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
No charge. Weld County residents, which the town scopes to Erie residents on the Weld County side of town, at either the Dacono or the Greeley facility.
