Ann Arbor collects three carts every week, one for trash, one for recycling and one for compost, and the city is strict about what stays out of them. Large items are the dividing line: a couch, a mattress, an appliance, a television or a pile of construction material left at the curb is not collected and can draw a fine. Those loads go instead to Recycle Ann Arbor, the city's non-profit partner. The Drop-Off Station on East Ellsworth Road takes household material with published per item prices, and the Recovery Yard on Jackson Road takes construction and demolition debris. Ann Arbor residents can apply for a city pass that waives the Drop-Off Station gate fee, though the disposal fees still apply. Household chemicals, paint, bulbs and batteries run through Washtenaw County, which offers a weekday center in Northville and Saturday Home Toxics collections on Zeeb Road inside the city, both free to county residents with an appointment.

Keep the cart stored at the side or rear of the dwelling when it is not out for collection, place it on the lawn extension or against the curb, never in a bike lane, with the handles facing away from the street, three feet from other carts and with the lid closed. A 64-gallon cart over 224 pounds or a 96-gallon cart over 336 pounds is not serviced, and nothing may sit on or around the cart.
Ann Arbor does not collect large items at the curb, so furniture, appliances and similar loads go to the Recycle Ann Arbor Drop-Off Station.

Separate clean concrete and clean wood from mixed debris so they can be recycled, because concrete has to be unpainted and free of trash, tile and brick, and clean wood has to be untreated with no paint, stain, particle board or plywood. Asbestos containing material and asphalt are refused at both sites, and brick, blocks and concrete are no longer accepted at the Drop-Off Station.
Exercise machines are not named anywhere, so the piece is priced and confirmed at the gate before it is loaded.

Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, take off loose weights and the console, and keep the metal frame and the plastic parts together so the gatehouse can price the load as one item.
The city provides a compost cart that is collected weekly, with published limits on branches and yard bags.

No charge. The first 64-gallon compost cart is provided at no charge to single-family residential properties and is collected weekly as part of the city curbside service. Yes. During the winter months from November to March, scrap metal, general waste, bulky waste, furniture and yard waste are not accepted after 5 p.m. because of low lighting and safety concerns at the storage areas.Official guidance
