A few pieces, one pickup

Your room has changed. The old furniture can go.

The desk you no longer use. The dresser that doesn’t fit the new layout. The chairs left over after a move. Choose the pieces you’re done with and give them a pickup day, without arranging a quote visit.

Choose each piece

A table and four chairs are five items.

You don’t need to guess how much space your furniture fills in a truck. Match each piece to the catalog, then add its quantity. Your total updates as you go.

Tables and chairs

Choose the table, then add each chair separately. Coffee tables, side tables and dining tables have their own options. A large or substantially heavy table has a different choice.

Dressers and mirrors

Match the dresser’s overall size. Add a separate dresser mirror as its own item if it is leaving too. Empty drawers and keep the belongings you want before moving the dresser outside.

Desks and bookshelves

Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

Count the furniture you want removed and empty drawers, shelves and cabinets. Add any other items to the booking instead of leaving an unlisted pile beside the furniture.

The weekly bulk pile

Accepted with preparation

Every residence may put out one bulk pile each week on its regular collection day, as long as the pile stays inside the town's size limit and contains household bulk waste only. Appliances, electronics and anything a contractor generated are refused.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. One bulk pile per residence each week on the regular collection day is included in the town's curbside service at no additional charge, with the pile limited to eight feet by four feet by four feet; appliances, electronics and contractor generated waste are not part of it.
When & how
Set the pile at the curb by 6 a.m. on the household's weekly collection day, and expect it on the same day as the trash, recycling, yard waste and brush because the town sends a separate truck for each stream.
Get it ready
Keep the pile inside eight feet by four feet by four feet, and keep appliances, televisions, computers and contractor material out of it. Carpet counts as bulk, and toilets, sinks and tubs are named as acceptable bulk items.
Town trash and recycling page with the five weekly routes and the five separate crews, the holiday closures, the 6 a.m. set out and 7 p.m. container return, the container size and weight limits, the yard waste and brush rules with the twenty container and pile limits, the weekly bulk pile limit and its accepted list with the appliance, electronics and contractor exclusions, the glass, battery, composting and Quarterly Recycling Day programs

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named in the town bulk list, so a couch, a chair or a table leaves in the weekly bulk pile on the regular collection day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Furniture is collected inside the one bulk pile per residence each week that is included in the town's curbside service at no additional charge, subject to the eight foot by four foot by four foot pile limit.
When & how
Put the furniture in the weekly bulk pile at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Empty the drawers and remove anything you are not sending, keep the piece inside the pile limit, and take pieces apart where that keeps the pile within eight feet by four feet by four feet.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Everything at the curb by 6 a.m.

Trash, recycling, yard waste, brush and the bulk pile all go out by 6 a.m. on the household's weekly collection day and no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before, at the curb line or edge of pavement where the crews can reach them, out of the sidewalk and the traffic right of way. Containers come back in by 7 p.m. on the collection day, and the town sends five separate trucks, one for each stream.

One bulk pile a week, sized to the town limit

One bulk pile per residence goes out each week with the regular collection, no larger than eight feet by four feet by four feet, and the town names furniture, carpet, toilets, sinks, tubs and empty gas mowers and leaf blowers as the kind of household bulk it takes. Appliances and electronics are refused, contractor generated waste is refused, and containers have to be 55 gallons or less and under 40 pounds with handles and tight lids.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Vienna households split their self haul between the town and the county. The town takes waste oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, most electronics without a screen and scrap metal four times a year at the Northside Property Yard on Mill Street NE, takes batteries all year at the town hall and the community center, and runs a food scraps composting drop off at the 400 block of Mill Street NE by the purple glass bin. Everything the town refuses goes to Fairfax County: the I-66 Transfer Station on West Ox Road takes residential trash, recycling and food scraps seven days a week, takes televisions, computers and peripherals free of charge, runs the free household hazardous waste program six days a week with a Wednesday closure, and prices appliances, mattresses, tires, small construction loads and extra trash on its published unit and tonnage schedule. Proof of Fairfax County residency may be required at the gate, and the site closes on Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Easter Sunday. Glass is the one stream that goes the other way, to the purple county bins at 431 Mill Street NE in town or the Jim Scott Community Center on Vaden Drive. Dropcurb starts outside. You arrange indoor carrying, including any interior stairs or elevator trip. We load and take away the furniture from an accessible outdoor location. Check your building’s rules and plan the route out before booking.
