Two items are allowed per pickup, and they have to sit apart from the cart so the crew can see them. No charge. Will the city take it?
Pontiac collects trash, yard waste and bulk items through a city curbside contract that Priority Waste has held since July 2024. Bulk pickup runs on your trash day and takes two items, with sofas, chairs, mattresses and most large appliances on the accepted list. Refrigerators cannot still hold refrigerant, construction material and automotive parts are refused, and televisions and computers are not part of the curbside program at all. The city runs two other routes for those: spring landfill days at the transfer station and the county NoHaz collection events, which take electronics, paint and household chemicals from Pontiac residents at no charge.

Get it ready
Empty and defrost a cooling appliance, disconnect the water line and take the doors off a refrigerator. If the unit is not going to DTE, get a licensed refrigeration technician to remove the Freon and tag the appliance before it goes outside.
Electronics are not in the curbside bulk program and are not accepted at the city recycling drop-off. Pontiac's route for them is the Oakland County NoHaz collection events, which take CRT and flat screen televisions and computers along with paint and household chemicals.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Pontiac is a NoHaz member community listed at no charge, so residents pay nothing per vehicle. Non-member communities and addresses outside Oakland County pay $135 per vehicle per event, and registration is required before an event.
When & how
NoHaz runs collection events on selected Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The 2026 events are finished, and the county says to check back in February 2027 for the next season, which usually opens in April or May.
Get it ready
Register at NoHaz.Eventbrite.com about three weeks before an event, separate electronics from paints and chemicals in the vehicle so the crews can unload them in order, and keep people and pets out of the way. Wood-encased console televisions are not accepted.
Construction items are refused in the city bulk pickup and refused at NoHaz. The spring landfill days accept wood and demolition items, but they exclude concrete, asphalt, stones, earth, logs, stumps and branches, so most project loads need a permitted facility or a rented container.

The city publishes no construction rate. A qualifying household load at the spring landfill days is free, and the container or landfill company quotes anything larger, so confirm the load, the classification and the price before hauling.

Watch for the city's spring landfill days, which run on selected Saturdays, and confirm the current season's dates because the published April and May 2026 dates have passed.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the curbside pile and keep hazardous material out of a debris load. Separate clean wood from concrete and soil, and ask the receiving site how it wants each category before you load the truck.
Exercise equipment is not named on the city's accepted lists, so it comes down to what the hauler will agree to take. Ask before anyone drags a treadmill to the curb, and be ready to describe the weight and how it comes apart.

Bag the trash before it goes in the cart, keep the lid closed, and leave space around the cart so the truck can reach it. Prune nothing into the street: yard waste has its own container rules and raking it into the roadway is an ordinance violation.

Trash, yard waste and bulk items all follow the same window: nothing goes to the curb before 7 p.m. the night before collection, and everything needs to be out by 7 a.m. on the collection morning. Special pickup items wait until after 7 p.m. the night before, the cart has to stand clear of cars, bags, totes, other carts, mailboxes and poles, and bulk items stay at least 3 feet from the cart.
Yard waste runs April through November in its own container
Yard debris is collected on the designated trash day from April 1 through November 30 and not in the winter months. Leaves, grass and twigs up to 2 inches in diameter and up to 4 feet long tied with rope or twine go in 30-gallon paper bags or a 10 to 35 gallon can with a visible yard waste sticker, containers stay under 50 pounds, and the limit is 10 bags, cans or bundles per week. Yard waste never goes in the street, and the state says yard clippings belong in compost rather than a landfill.

No charge. Two items are collected on the bulk day that falls on your trash day as part of the city curbside contract. Anything above the two item limit is the resident's cost, and the city's older bulk guide, published when the previous contractor held the work, listed a charge for each extra item.

$50 for gift card for a refrigerator or freezer of 10 to 30 cubic feet, with an additional $20 for a small fridge or freezer, a room air conditioner or a dehumidifier removed at the same visit and $20 for a small unit under 9.9 cubic feet. The unit has to be clean, empty, defrosted, working and free of cut cords, an adult 18 or older must be present, and the programme allows two visits per site each calendar year, each limited to two large and two small appliances.
