The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Lewisville franchises its residential trash and recycling collection to Republic Services and pays for recycling inside the basic refuse fee on the water bill. Each house gets a blue 96 gallon trash cart and a green recycling cart, with two extra bags or cans allowed once the cart is full, and bulky waste rides along on the same collection day as long as bulky and yard waste together stay within three cubic yards. Appliances, furniture, mattresses, fencing, large toys, do-it-yourself project waste and bundled carpet are all named as acceptable bulky items, while a coolant appliance needs a certified technician's tag first. Anything larger than the bulky rule of thumb, plus soil, concrete, stumps and treated wood, moves to a Republic special collection or a free landfill trip, and the monthly appointment-only event at the Residential Convenience Center takes electronics and household chemicals. Dropcurb hauls residential items from addresses across Lewisville.

Residential trash service

Accepted with preparation

Every Lewisville residence gets a blue 96 gallon trash cart from the franchised hauler, and once the cart is full a household may set out two more bags or cans of trash of up to 39 gallons each. Extra carts carry an additional monthly charge.

City cost & eligibility
The City does not publish the residential refuse fee on the service pages, and an additional trash cart carries an additional monthly charge that is also unpublished. Confirm the current amounts with Republic Services or the City at 972-219-3699 and ask about the 20 percent senior discount, which requires the City's application form.
When & how
Carts go to the curb or alley collection point by 7 a.m. on the collection day. The only holidays that affect pickup are Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and each one pushes service back a day.
Get it ready
Set the cart out no more than 24 hours before collection and bring it in within 24 hours after. Keep the cart at least 3 feet from other carts and objects such as trees, mailboxes and cars, leave 16 feet of clearance above it, and turn the wheels toward the house. Only waste from the residence may go out, because waste from a nonresidential source is not collected as residential waste.

Curbside and drop-off recycling

Accepted with preparation

The green recycling cart is collected on the same day as trash, and the cost of recycling is included in the basic refuse fee. Curbside material goes in clean, dry and loose, and four City drop-off sites take the same list around the clock.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Recycling is included in the basic refuse fee paid by residents on the water bill, and the City drop-off sites are free to residents and small businesses.
When & how
Recycling goes out on the same weekly day as trash, by 7 a.m., with the same Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day shifts.
Get it ready
Put material in the cart clean, dry and loose rather than bagged, and leave plastic bags, coat hangers, shredded paper, hardcover books, styrofoam, rigid plastics, garden hoses and cords, mirror and auto glass, pizza boxes, yard waste, pipes, electronics, clothing and hazardous waste out. At a drop-off site, keep lids and doors closed and never leave material outside a full container.

Yard waste and brush

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is collected on the same day as trash and goes out bagged, containerized or bundled rather than loose. Soil, dirt, sand, concrete, large stumps, shrubs with intact root balls and treated wood are not yard waste and are handled another way.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Yard waste is part of the residential collection service, with the combined bulky and yard waste set out limited to 3 cubic yards on a collection day. A special collection for material such as soil, concrete or stumps is arranged with Republic Services at the resident's cost.
When & how
Yard waste goes out on the same weekly day as trash and recycling, by 7 a.m., within the combined 3 cubic yard limit.
Get it ready
Bag or containerize leaves, yard trimmings and garden debris, or bundle and tie small brush under 4 inches in diameter and under 4 feet long, keeping each container or bundle at or below 50 pounds. Keep soil, dirt, sand, concrete, large stumps, root balls and treated wood out of the yard waste pile.

Bulky waste on the trash day

Accepted with preparation

Bulky waste is material too large for the trash cart, and the hauler collects it on the same day as trash from beside the cart. The City's rule of thumb is that anything too large to fit in the back of a pickup truck is not bulky waste and needs a special collection.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Bulky waste is part of the franchised residential service, with bulky and yard waste combined limited to 3 cubic yards on a collection day. Oversized items need a Republic Services special collection, which the resident pays for.
When & how
Bulky items go out on the regular collection day next to the trash cart, and the same truck route handles trash, recycling and yard waste that day.
Get it ready
Keep the pile to household material such as appliances, bicycles, furniture, fencing cut to 4 by 4 or 4 by 3 sections, large toys, mattresses, do-it-yourself project waste and carpeting bundled in lengths of no more than 4 feet, and keep the combined pile within the 3 cubic yard limit.

Couches, furniture and carpet

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named in the City's list of acceptable bulky items, and carpeting is accepted when it is bundled in lengths of no more than 4 feet. Both go out on the regular collection day beside the trash cart.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Furniture is part of the franchised residential bulky service, within the combined 3 cubic yard bulky and yard waste limit on a collection day.
When & how
Set the furniture or bundled carpet next to the trash cart on the regular collection day, out by 7 a.m.
Get it ready
Keep the piece whole and reachable, cut and bundle carpeting into lengths of no more than 4 feet, and keep fencing and other project pieces to the published 4 by 4 or 4 by 3 section sizes.
Residential trash service, bulky waste, yard waste and landfill privileges

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses are named in the City's list of acceptable bulky items, so a mattress or box spring goes out beside the trash cart on the regular collection day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Mattresses are part of the franchised residential bulky service, within the combined 3 cubic yard bulky and yard waste limit on a collection day.
When & how
Put the mattress next to the trash cart on the regular collection day, out by 7 a.m.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and flat beside the cart, and keep the whole bulky pile within the 3 cubic yard limit so nothing is left behind.
Residential trash service, bulky waste, yard waste and landfill privileges

Appliances and coolant units

Special rules apply

Appliances are named as acceptable bulky items in Lewisville, and a unit with PCB, CFC or HCFC coolant such as a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner is only eligible for curbside pickup once a certified technician tags it to confirm the coolant was safely removed.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Appliances are part of the franchised residential bulky service within the combined 3 cubic yard limit, and a coolant unit needs a certified technician's tag before it is collected.
When & how
Have the coolant removed and tagged first, then set the appliance beside the trash cart on the regular collection day, out by 7 a.m.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure the doors. For a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner, arrange the coolant removal with a certified technician who tags the unit, or use a local metal recycler or a removal service instead of waiting for the collection day.
Residential trash service, bulky waste, yard waste and landfill privileges

Televisions and electronics

Special rules apply

Electronics do not go in the recycling cart or the trash. Lewisville residents book an appointment at the Residential Convenience Center, where the monthly household hazardous waste and electronic waste collection takes televisions, computers, small appliances and cords.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The collection program is for residents who live inside Lewisville city limits and pay a Lewisville water bill, and a valid driver license proves residency. Businesses and non-residents are turned away.
When & how
Book an appointment at the Residential Convenience Center, 330 Jones Street. Appointments are Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. when available, one car per ten minute block, and one Saturday a month from 9 a.m. to noon, four cars per block.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of both carts and out of the drop-off recycling containers, remove personal data before the device leaves the house, and bring the driver license that proves Lewisville residency to the appointment.
Hazardous household waste and electronics collection programRecycling services, accepted material, drop-off sites and resources

Project waste and building material

Special rules apply

Do-it-yourself project waste is named among the acceptable bulky items, so a homeowner's own small project load can go out with the bulky collection. Material from a contractor or a business is refused as nonresidential waste, and soil, concrete, stumps and treated wood move to a special collection or the landfill instead.

City cost & eligibility
A resident's own do-it-yourself project waste fits the free bulky collection within the 3 cubic yard combined limit, while a special collection for soil, concrete, stumps or an oversized load is arranged directly with Republic Services and paid by the resident at an unpublished rate. Waste from commercial activity is not collected as residential waste.
When & how
Put small project waste out beside the trash cart on the regular collection day within the 3 cubic yard limit, or arrange a Republic special collection for material the bulky route will not take.
Get it ready
Cut fencing to 4 by 4 or 4 by 3 sections and bundle carpeting, keep the pile within the size limit, and keep soil, dirt, sand, concrete, large stumps, shrubs with intact root balls and treated wood out of the yard waste and bulky piles. A contractor's debris is not residential waste and is not set out at the curb.
Residential trash service, bulky waste, yard waste and landfill privileges

Tires

Not on the regular city route

Tires are not on the City's list of acceptable bulky items and they are refused at the hazardous waste collection events, so Lewisville publishes no curbside tire route.

City cost & eligibility
There is no curbside tire collection and the hazardous household waste events refuse tires outright. The City's recycling resource list names Firestone and Goodyear locations that take tires along with motor oil, oil filters and batteries, and those businesses set their own terms, so confirm before making the trip.
When & how
Use a retailer route such as the Firestone or Goodyear locations the City lists for tires, because neither the curbside collection nor the hazardous waste event takes them.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the trash cart, the recycling cart, the drop-off containers and the bulky pile, and keep them away from the hazardous waste appointment because they are refused there.

Household hazardous waste

Special rules apply

Paint, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, automotive fluids, batteries and other hazardous material do not go in the trash. Lewisville residents book an appointment at the Residential Convenience Center for the monthly collection.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The program is only for residents who live inside Lewisville city limits and pay a Lewisville water bill, with a valid driver license as proof of residency. The City reserves the right to refuse any waste.
When & how
Book an appointment for the Residential Convenience Center, 330 Jones Street. Appointments are Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. when available, one car per ten minute block, and one Saturday a month from 9 a.m. to noon, four cars per block.
Get it ready
Bring acids, aerosol cans, all batteries, antifreeze, brake fluid, craft and hobby chemicals, degreasers, drain cleaners, fertilizer, fluorescent lights, gasoline, herbicides, household chemicals, motor oil, paints and stains, paint thinners, pest strips, pesticides, photo chemicals, pool chemicals, oil filters, solvents, spray paint, transmission fluid and varnishes. Leave ammunition, medical waste, propane or butane cylinders, explosives, fireworks, biohazard material, septic waste, gas powered equipment and business waste at home.
Hazardous household waste and electronics collection programResidential trash service, bulky waste, yard waste and landfill privileges

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise machines are refused at the hazardous waste events but are not named in the City's list of acceptable bulky items, so the route depends on the machine. A piece that fits the bulky rule of thumb can go out with the household's bulky waste.

City cost & eligibility
Exercise equipment has no named local rate. Confirm with Republic Services or the City at 972-219-3699 whether the machine is collected as bulky waste within the 3 cubic yard limit or needs a special collection, which the resident pays for.
When & how
Confirm the machine first, then set it beside the trash cart on the regular collection day within the combined 3 cubic yard limit, or book a Republic special collection.
Get it ready
Fold or dismantle the machine where the maker allows it and keep the parts together as one item, and take off any loose weights so the piece can be handled beside the cart. Do not take the machine to the hazardous waste appointment, because exercise machines are refused there.

Three cubic yards for bulky and yard waste together

Bulky waste and yard waste are collected on the same day as trash, and the two piles together may not exceed 3 cubic yards on any collection day. As a rule of thumb, anything too large to fit in the back of a pickup truck is not bulky waste and needs a special collection arranged with the hauler.

Coolant appliances need a certified tag

A refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner with PCB, CFC or HCFC coolant must be tagged by a certified technician confirming the coolant was safely removed before it is eligible for curbside pickup. A local metal recycler or a removal service is the alternative the City offers.

Residential trash service, bulky waste, yard waste and landfill privileges

Household waste only at the curb

Residents may not set out waste generated from a nonresidential source as residential waste, and household hazardous waste such as paint, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, automotive fluids, batteries and ammunition never goes in the trash or the recycling cart.

Local recyclers and donation drop-offs

Households that want an appliance recycled or reusable furniture and household goods donated instead of going to the curb.

Cost & conditions
These are independent businesses the City lists as resources, and each sets its own terms, so confirm acceptance and any charge directly with the business before making the trip. The City notes that inclusion on its list is not an endorsement.
Arrange it
The City's resource list names AAA Recycling at 575 Jubilee Lane for appliances, scrap metal, car batteries and aluminum, the Lewisville Goodwill Retail Center at 919 W. Main Street for clothing, household items and electronics, the Dallas Furniture Bank in Carrollton for usable basic household furniture, and Christian Community Action at 128 South Mill Street, which takes appliances and household items and arranges large item pickups by phone.

Donation routes take reusable goods rather than disposal loads, and recyclers set their own accepted items and charges, so a broken or non reusable item still goes through the curbside bulky collection.
