Appliances and water heaters are accepted, but an appliance that holds refrigerant needs the refrigerant removed and tagged before it can join the bulk pile.
City cost & eligibility
$20 for for removing and properly disposing of the Freon from a residential appliance at the landfill, as the City publishes it, with the customer removing all food first. The alternative route is to have a licensed appliance service professional remove and tag the refrigerant, after which the appliance goes out with the free bulk waste collection for Sandy residents.
When & how
Either take the unit to the landfill for the published Freon service, or have it removed and tagged professionally and set it out no sooner than seventy-two hours before the bulk collection date.
Get it ready
Empty and clean the unit before it moves, because the customer removes all food. Untagged appliances with refrigerant still in them are refused in both the bulk pile and the dumpster, and a cooled unit also needs doors handled safely before set-out.
Sandy allows one bulk waste pile per home, set out no sooner than seventy-two hours before the scheduled collection date, two feet out from the gutter and clear of driveways. Hauling bulk waste to another location counts as illegal dumping and is reported to the police at 801-799-3000.
The bulk waste programme is for Sandy residents, and the City states it is not available to businesses, apartments, condominiums, mobile parks or Salt Lake County residents. Anything outside the accepted list has to be hauled away privately or placed in a rented dumpster.
Small loose material is bagged, boxed or bundled, carpet is rolled, green waste is cut to four feet and eighteen inches with no sod, fencing, posts, lumber and scrap metal are cut to four feet with scrap under fifty pounds, small gas equipment has the oil and gas drained, grills lose the propane tank, furniture loses its glass, drums are empty with the tops off, and appliances that hold refrigerant are tagged after professional removal.
Hazardous waste and electronics drop free in Sandy
The Salt Lake County household hazardous waste collection centre at 8805 South 700 West takes paint, pesticides, fuels, antifreeze, used oil, batteries, fluorescent tubes, cooking oil, mercury devices and electronics free from county homes, Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Radioactive material and explosives are refused and go to the fire department.

Drop the material at the centre Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and note that it is closed on county holidays.
