The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Williamsburg collects garbage in a city cart on Monday or Tuesday, with an automated truck that never leaves the cab, so everything has to be inside the cart. Furniture and appliances are a separate service: two large items per collection, three collections a year, booked with Public Works by noon on the Thursday before. Recycling runs every other week through Republic Services with a blue cart, and yard debris goes out with the garbage as ten bags or ten bundles. Everything the curbside programme will not take has a route rather than a guess: remodeling material and other bulk loads go to the James City County convenience center at Jolly Pond Road on a coupon or card basis, anti-freeze, motor oil and cooking oil go to the Tewning Road center, and paint, chemicals and computer equipment go to the monthly household chemical and computer recycling events at Warhill High School.

Weekly garbage cart

Accepted with preparation

Garbage goes out in the city cart on Monday or Tuesday, and because the truck is automated every bag has to be inside the cart.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no per can rate for residential garbage collection, so confirm the current charge and the account terms with Public Works on 757-220-6140.
When & how
The cart goes to the curb before 7 a.m. on the assigned collection day, or the evening before, and comes back in after collection day.
Get it ready
Use the city cart in the issued size, gray with a blue lid, with the lid facing the street. Keep carts side by side rather than front to back, at least three feet apart and five feet from parked cars, trees, mailboxes, utility poles and fences. A household that cannot move the cart to the curb can ask for backyard collection.

Furniture and household bulk

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is collected through the household bulk service, which takes two large items a collection and runs three times a year by appointment.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no per item rate for household bulk, so confirm the current terms with Public Works when the appointment is booked on 757-220-6140.
When & how
Book the appointment no later than noon on the Thursday before the collection day, then put the items at the curb before 7 a.m. on the collection day. Each household gets two large items per collection and three collections a year.
Get it ready
Keep the items at the curb rather than inside the property, and keep remodeling or building materials, car parts and toilets out of the pile because the bulk service refuses them. A piece that is still usable can be donated instead, and the city lists local charities that collect.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is named in the city's allowable bulk list, so it goes out through the same appointment with the two item limit.

City cost & eligibility
No mattress rate is published, and the pickup is booked rather than automatic, so confirm the current terms with Public Works on 757-220-6140 when the appointment is made.
When & how
Book the bulk appointment by noon on the Thursday before the collection day and put the mattress at the curb before 7 a.m. on that day.
Get it ready
A mattress and its box spring count against the two large items allowed for that collection, so decide whether to send both at once. Keep the piece out of the garbage cart, because the automated truck only empties the cart.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Refrigerators and washers or dryers are allowable bulk items, and the city also runs a white goods recycling programme.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no appliance rate, so confirm the current terms with Public Works on 757-220-6140. Dominion Energy separately collects a secondary refrigerator or freezer from the home and pays the resident a rebate per unit on 888-366-8280, so it is worth asking whether a working unit qualifies before booking the city pickup.
When & how
Book the bulk appointment by noon on the Thursday before the collection day, or ask about the white goods programme and the utility rebate route before the appliance goes out.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and keep it out of the garbage cart. If the appliance still works, ask Public Works about white goods recycling and about the utility collection before booking a bulk pickup.

Computers and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

Computers, monitors and small devices are collected at the free-standing computer recycling events the city joins five times a year, and flat screen monitors, desktop and laptop computers and CPUs are also excluded from the coupon requirement at the James City County convenience centres, so those three can be dropped off free during the centres' published hours.

City cost & eligibility
No fee is published for the computer recycling events, so confirm the accepted items and the current arrangements with Public Works on 757-220-6140 or the authority on 757-259-9850.
When & how
Take the equipment to Warhill High School at 4615 Opportunity Way on the second Saturday of February, April, June, August or October between 8 a.m. and noon, or drop a flat screen monitor, desktop computer, laptop or CPU at a James City County convenience centre at no charge during its published hours.
Get it ready
Accepted computer items are desktop and laptop computers, servers, LCD and CRT monitors, computer wiring, desktop printers including multi function units, fax machines, desktop photocopiers and scanners and cell phones. Hard drive data is wiped to a triple pass or physically destroyed, but remove obvious personal material first. Televisions, alkaline batteries, medications and explosives are not accepted at these events.

Televisions

Special rules apply

Televisions are on the unacceptable list for the chemical and computer events, and the city publishes no television route, so the item has to be confirmed.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no television route or fee, and the household chemical and computer recycling events refuse televisions by name, so call Public Works on 757-220-6140 or the Jolly Pond convenience center on 757-565-0971 before moving a screen.
When & how
Ask which route takes a television before it leaves the house, since the event programme will not accept it and the household bulk list does not name screens.
Get it ready
Keep the television out of the garbage cart, because the automated truck only empties the cart, and do not take it to the chemical and computer events, which list televisions as unacceptable.

Construction and remodel material

Not on the regular city route

Remodeling and building materials are refused by the household bulk service and go to the Jolly Pond convenience center on a coupon or card basis.

City cost & eligibility
From $4 for the value of one coupon in the city booklet, which sells five coupons for $20.00, with the number of coupons required depending on the size of the load. City of Williamsburg residents taking bulk, construction material or yard debris to the James City County convenience center, either with prepaid coupons bought at the Treasurer's Office or by credit or debit card on site.
When & how
Load up and drive to 1204 Jolly Pond Road, open every day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and pay with coupons or a card at the gate.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the household bulk pile, because the city refuses remodeling and building materials there. Bring enough coupons for the load, or plan to pay by card on site, and cover the load for the trip. Dump trailers and trailers larger than the county's published 5 by 8 by 20 limit carrying construction debris or household trash are directed to the Waste Management Transfer Station rather than the convenience centre.

Tires

Special rules apply

Tires are refused in the garbage cart and on the household bulk pile, and the route the county publishes is the convenience centres, where tires require a coupon from the county coupon booklet. The city lists tire recycling among its own programmes without publishing a site or a fee, so confirm the city side with Public Works on 757-220-6140.

City cost & eligibility
The city lists tire recycling among its programmes without a location or a fee, while the James City County convenience centres take tires with a coupon from the county coupon booklet. Call Public Works on 757-220-6140 to confirm the city route, or take the tires to a county convenience centre with a coupon and confirm what it costs.
When & how
Ask first, then deliver the tires to the site Public Works names during its opening hours.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the garbage cart and off the household bulk pile, because neither names them. A tire shop can also keep the old tires when a new set is fitted.

Other household items and yard debris

Accepted with preparation

Yard debris rides the garbage collection day in bags or bundles, and other large household items go through the three times a year bulk appointment.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no rate for the bulk collection or the yard debris service, so confirm the current terms with Public Works on 757-220-6140.
When & how
Yard debris goes out on the garbage collection day without an appointment. Large household items need the bulk appointment booked by noon on the Thursday before the collection day.
Get it ready
Yard debris is limited to ten bags of leaves or grass clippings or ten bundles of sticks and limbs, tied with twine or boxed, with sticks under four feet long and under three inches in diameter, and loose piles are not collected. Keep the bulk pile inside the two item limit and clear of anything the city refuses.

Paint, chemicals and fluids

Not on the regular city route

Paint and chemicals go to the household chemical collections, while anti-freeze, motor oil and cooking oil go to the Tewning Road center.

City cost & eligibility
No fee is published for the household chemical collections or the convenience center drop-offs, so confirm the accepted material and any charge with Public Works on 757-220-6140 or the authority on 757-259-9850.
When & how
Take paint, cleaning solutions and kerosene to Warhill High School at 4615 Opportunity Way on the second Saturday of February, April, June, August or October from 8 a.m. to noon, and take anti-freeze, motor oil, cooking oil and rechargeable batteries to the Tewning Road center during its opening hours.
Get it ready
Keep chemicals out of the garbage cart and out of the convenience center's recycling bins. Latex paint may be dried out with kitty litter or another absorbent and then set in the regular garbage cart with the lid off, but oil based paint belongs at the chemical collection. Televisions, alkaline batteries, medications, explosives, ammunition, gun powder, radioactives and business or medical waste are not accepted at those events.

Williamsburg keeps most household material in its own curbside programme: a garbage cart on Monday or Tuesday, a blue recycling cart every other week, ten bags or bundles of yard debris on the collection day, and a household bulk appointment for two large items, three times a year.
